TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST
On Monday (January7, 2002) at approximately 9:30 A.M., the Thibodaux Police Departmentís HousingAuthority Commander Sergeant Calvin Cooks reportedly observed the driver of awhite Chevy Malibu fail to stop at a stop sign in the 1300 block of Eagle Drive.
According to theOfficers report, as he made an attempt to conduct a traffic stop for theviolation, but the driver, later identified as 20 year old Derrick Paul Colemanof 1302 Tiger Dr., failed to comply. Colemanreportedly refused to stop his vehicle until he made it to his residence wherehe then exited the vehicle and began running toward his back yard. Coleman then jumped a ditch and headed toward the 300 block of BobbyStreet. After a short foot pursuit,Coleman was apprehended by Thibodaux Police Officers in that area.
Thibodaux PoliceOfficers grew suspicious of Colemanís attempt to flee and believed there wasillegal drugs inside of Colemanís vehicle. The Thibodaux Police Departmentís K-9 Officers ( with K-9 dog Cee) was called to conduct a search of Colemanís vehicle. During the search, Cee indicated that there was illegal narcotics underthe front driverís seat of Colemanís vehicle, where Officers reportedly located aclear plastic bag containing 28.3 grams of Marijuana with an estimated streetvalue of $160.00.
Coleman was arrestedand charged with one count of Stop Sign Violation, one count Second OffensePossession of Marijuana (with bond set at $ 50,000.) and also booked on anoutstanding Thibodaux Narcotics warrant for one count of Distribution ofMarijuana with a bond of $35,000. Coleman was later transported to the LafourcheParish Detention Center with bond amount totaling $85, 000.00.
