An inside look into the recreation department:

Our staff is currently on preparing for the summer months ahead of us. I know what you must be thinking....we are only in February!!! Well please allow me to explain to you why we get a head start on our summer programs:

On average we prepare for 900 participants for baseball alone, with coaches added in, that would be another 160 added on top of the 900!! Also, we average around 80-85 teams, which means we have to find a sponsor for each one of them. Once the sponsorships are in and all our participants are registered, we have to draft all teams and order uniforms for everyone! WHEW, talk about we have to stay very organized around here! But wait, there is more! We also look for volunteer coaches that will head coach or assist with teams. We also have to hire seasonal workers to umpire, score keep, and supervise fields. Ordering equipment, booking practice, creating game schedules is also on our baseball agenda!!

Now let's move on from baseball, we are also preparing for the Municipal Pool. Our goal is to have the Municipal Pool up and running by April 2014. All repairs and maintenance at the pool take place during the off season. We prepare for 9 different classes for the swimming lessons. We average around 300 participants in the June session and another 300 during the July session. NOW THAT IS COOL! Not only do we have swimming lessons, but we now have a Competitive Swim Team and we offer pool parties to those who rent the pool during the summer months. We have to hire lifeguards. Those who are hired must be Red Cross Certified or must undergo proper training before they are scheduled to work.

I'm not finished yet! We also offer Summer Camp! We usually average 50 children in the program. We must hire camp counselors and team leaders for the camp. Field trips, buses, activities, all need to be booked ahead of time. We also need make sure that daily and weekly activities are planned ahead. Camper & counselor shirts need to be ordered. Concessions need to be set up, camp locations must be booked months ahead of the camp. Supplies for camp should be accounted for.

And if you think that is a lot, we also prepare for all our usual monthly programs through all these summer preparations! We have Adult Zumba, Strong Women and Men's Basketball Programs taken place.

All this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to preparing for summer programs!! (I'm sure I left out a few details here and there)... Now you can see why we definitely get a head start around here!
