READING CHALLENGE

On February 26, 2003 several officers of the Thibodaux Police Department participated in the 2003 Reading is Fundamental Community Reading Challenge at Thibodaux Elementary.  Last year, Thibodaux Elementary was named the large site winner for the State of Louisiana.  This year, the Thibodaux Police Department is helping Thibodaux Elementary reach their ultimate goal of being named National Large Site Winner.

This event started February 14, 2003 and ends on February 27, 3003 with a different theme each day.  The theme for Wednesday February 26, 2003 was "Helping Hands, Read with Me".  The officers brought their favorite book(s) and read to the children in the different classes.

Detective Greg Navarre of the Thibodaux Police Department's Juvenile Division helped in rallying the officers and coordinating the schedules in this worthwhile cause.

Thibodaux Police Chief, Howard Robertson, a former teacher, strongly supports the Reading is Fundamental Program.  Robertson believes that education is a major factor in the reduction of crime.  Chief Robertson stated, “ RIF is a wonderful program allowing students and community leaders the opportunity to share the joy of reading.”
