TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST

On February 18, 2003 at 12:00 a.m. Officer Jeff Chamberlain was near the intersection of Back Street and Henry Schuyler Thibodaux Road when he saw a vehicle fail to come to a complete stop at that intersection.  Officer Chamberlain then initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle in the two hundred block of Sanders Street.

Officer Chamberlain then met with the driver identified as Kendell R. Jones, Age 20 of 204A Maple Street in Labadieville.  It was then learned that Mr. Jones was driving under suspension.  Mr. Jones was then placed under arrest for this and stop sign violation.

During the course of Officer Chamberlainís traffic investigation, Detective Brian Fontenot arrived to assist.  Detective Fontenot met with the front seat passenger who was identified as Brandon K. Gilton Age 20 of 205 Sparrow Street.  On the floorboard of the vehicle at Mr. Giltonís feet, Detective Fontenot observed two small plastic bags.  Upon further inspection, one of the bags contained suspected marijuana while the other contained suspected crack cocaine weighing .1 gram with a street value of $20.00.  The suspected marijuana weighed 2.0 grams with a street value of $10.00.  Mr. Gilton was then placed under arrest and both Mr. Gilton and Mr. Jones were transported to the Thibodaux Police Department.

Mr. Jones was booked on the two traffic offenses of Driving Under Suspension and Stop Sign Violation and later released.  Mr. Gilton was booked with Possession of Crack Cocaine and Possession of Marijuana.  Mr. Gilton was then brought to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center to await the setting of his bond.
