POLICE OLYMPICS HELD IN THIBODAUX

The Thibodaux Police Department hosted the Louisiana Law Enforcement Sports Association’s 2002 Police Olympics. The games were held during the week of May 31 through June 7, 2002.

Police officers from across the state gathered in Thibodaux during the week to participate in various sporting events. Approximately 200 officers were in Thibodaux during the week to take part in the games. Officers from New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport Police Departments joined in with officers from the local area agencies, Thibodaux Police Department, Morgan City Police Department as well as deputies from Terrebonne Parish, Assumption Parish, St. Charles Parish and Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Offices to compete in the games.

The competition included events such as bowling, golf, power lifting, shuffleboard, pool and darts. The events were held at various locations throughout the surrounding area.

Thibodaux Police Department Lt. Jimmy Barrios, a Louisiana Law Enforcement Sports Association board member, stated that he was pleased with the turnout for this year’s games.

Quote from Thibodaux Police Chief Craig Melancon, "This has been a nice event where we have been able to welcome approximately 200 police officers from across the state to compete in these games. Thibodaux Police Department Lt. Jimmy Barrios, a Louisiana Law Enforcement Sports Association board member, has informed me that the week has been very successful. This is an opportunity for police officers to come together to compete and relax, while at the same time increase networking capabilities so that law enforcement agencies from across the state can continue to maintain open lines of communications."
