OnThursday (December 27, 2001) shortly after 10:00 P.M., Thibodaux PoliceDepartmentís Narcotic Officers patrolling northbound on Canal Blvd. (near East5th St.) observed the driver of 1996 Chevrolet Suburban switch laneson the Highway without using proper signal indicators. As the officers attemptedto conduct a traffic stop with this vehicle for the traffic violation, thedriver reportedly did not come to a complete stop until approximately sixminutes later. The traffic stop was conducted near the intersection of HarrisonSt. and West 7th.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 28 yearold Leonard Evans of 176 East 23rd St, Larose La. As Officer made contact with Evans, they reportedly detecteda strong odor of marijuana coming from Evansí clothing and vehicle.
Thibodaux Narcotic Officers, along with their K-9 dogCee, conducted a vehicle search on the Suburban. During the search, Cee gave anaggressive alert to the Officers that indicated that suspected drugs were insideof the vehicle. Officers reported that they then located a rolled cigarcontaining suspected marijuana and a plastic bag containing a small amount ofsuspected marijuana gleanings inside of the vehicle.
Evans was placed under arrest and transported to theThibodaux Police Department. Whileat the police Department, Officers reportedly discovered a small bag containingsuspected marijuana in the back of the patrol unit that transported Evans. (Thedrugs were reportedly not in the vehicle before transporting Evans).
Evans was charged with Failure to give turningsignal, Improper Lane usage, Flight from an officer, Possession of Marijuana andpossession of drug paraphernalia. ( all charges (1) one count each). Evans wastransported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center with a bond amount set at$1,000. Evansí female passengerwas not charged.
